The Power of Om |
This primordial sound, according to the wisdom of the ancients, created a vibration so powerful as to manifest everything we know as our universe. The sound Om arising from the vocal chords starts from the base of the throat with the vowel A ("ah"), the first sound in the Sanskrit alphabet. The A blends with U to create a sustained sound of O, and then dissolves as one's lips come together to form the final sound of the Sanskrit alphabet, M, and begins again with the vowel A. The Om chant should have the resounding sound of a bell. It fills the mind with peace, makes it focused and replete with subtle sound. |
Consider chanting Om at the beginning and end of your yoga practice. As you chant, notice the vibrations within your body, the rhythemic beating of your heart, the steady flow of your breath moving in and out. When practicing with others, if you stay very present, you may feel the energy of the person next to you or the subtle pulsation of a room full of fellow practicioners. |

To truly experience the power of vibration, encourage a group of friends to chant a rolling Om. Begin by sitting in meditation for a few minutes. Then inhale deeply and begin the first Om together. As soon as you finish one Om, immediately begin another, and then another--each at your own pace. Chant this way until you complete eight rounds, and then sit quietly with your eyes closed, feeling the vibrations and experiencing a profound sense of peace. |
