Yoga Class Descriptions
HATHA YOGA ~ Hatha yoga refers to a set of physical postures (asanas), and sequences of asanas, designed to focus your mind on alignment of muscles and bones while coordinating movement of your body with your breath. Hatha Yoga classes include breathing techniques (pranayama).
Vinyasa may not be suitable for all students. Vinyasa students must evidence knowledge of basic poses and correct alignment in all poses, as well as body and breath awareness. The instructor can discuss with you whether vinyasa is suitable for you. At Metta Yoga Studio, we want your practice to be enjoyable and safe, avoiding any unnecessary injuries due to body predisposition, or the body and mind not being appropriately prepared for this practice.
YIN YOGA ~ Yin Yoga is a quiet practice that gently targets deepest connective tissue not normally exercised as much in a more active yoga practice. Connective tissue responds better to gentle pressure applied over a longer duration. For this reason, Yin Yoga poses are held for longer time duration, generally from 3-8 minutes. All Yin Yoga poses are performed on the floor sitting, supine or prone.
LITTLE
BIT OF EVERYTHING ~ This is a gentle style of mixed level class that may include a variety of the styles of yoga presented at Metta Yoga Studio, and will be designed to accommodate each student.
KARMA YOGA ~ These classes are offered to benefit the community. Regular class fees do not apply, but a donation is suggested that will be given to a charity. The class will be a basic Hatha Yoga class, appropriate for students of all levels, including those who have never taken a yoga class.
RESTORATIVE YOGA ~ This class is perfect for individuals looking for stress relief, suffering from illness, injury or major life changes, and also ideal for a very gentle introduction to yoga techniques. A non-muscular practice, asanas are held for longer periods of time with the support of props (sandbags, bolsters, blankets) allowing for deep relaxation of the mind and body. 20-30 minutes in a restorative posture is said to be equivalent to 2 hours of sleep. Suitable for all people, even if you have never taken a yoga class. Pre-registration is required as class size is limited.
What to Expect at a Metta Yoga Studio Class
At the Metta Yoga Studio, every class begins with a few quiet minutes for calming the mind and bringing focus to the practice. A warm-up period follows, progressing into the main poses comprising the body of the class, and closes in a relaxation period that allows the body to more fully integrate the benefits of the practice.
We practice in bare feet, preferably on an empty stomach, and in semi-fitted clothing that allows for ease of movement. Baggy pants and shirts have a tendency to interfere with movement and can obstruct the view of knees, ankles, hips, shoulders, elbows and other areas that are important to be able to see when checking for alignment.
Please arrive at your first class a little early to complete a questionnaire. Plan to arrive a little early to all classes so that you have a few minutes to get settled in and be on your mat by start of class. We have a space where you can change clothing if you are unable to do so prior to arriving.
All classes will start and end on time.
What to Bring With You
If you have your own mat and water bottle, you may wish to bring those with you. We have a limited supply of mats and straps, as well as blankets, bolsters, blocks and water.
